In March, the European Union and the Canadian Ministry for Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) undertook a roadshow across  Canada to bring Horizon Europe closer to the Canadian scientific community and help Canadian researchers and innovators to better understand the programme and the new opportunities in order to reap the full benefits of  Canada’s association to Pillar II (which funds collaborative research to tackle global challenges and industrial competitiveness) as well as the opportunities available under Pillar I (Excellent Science: Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions and the European Research Council). In addition to providing an introduction to Horizon Europe, the information sessions covered practical questions related to Canadian participation in the programme such as the application and evaluation procedures.

The roadshow started in Vancouver, Edmonton and Saskatoon, between 10 and 14 March, featuring speakers from the European Commission and the EU Delegation to Canada, ISED, ERCEA, Euraxess North America, and the Horizon Academy. The roadshow subsequently moved to Eastern Canada, with sessions in Montréal, Halifax and St. John’s, between 24 and 28 March. The success of the initiative, which was a result of the close cooperation between the EU and Canadian teams, with the participation of representatives from EU Member States in a ‘Team Europe’ approach,  was reflected by the large number of attendees which included both researchers and companies.

The roadshow took place back-to-back with the Joint Science & Technology Cooperation Committee (JSTCC) on 18 March and the first EU-Canada Association Committee on 19 March in Ottawa. Since 2024, Canada’s association to Pillar II of Horizon Europe has opened new opportunities for R&I collaboration between the EU and Canada, allowing researchers and innovators to collaborate more closely to tackle global challenges and benefit from pooling each other’s talents and scientific excellence.
